Helping Puerto Rico Rise Again

What's Happening

On Tuesday, Pastor Quentin Wallace sent out this urgent telephone appeal to our Covenant congregation via Calling Post:

"...from Rev. Quentin Wallace, Senior Pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church. Hello, Covenant families, this is a plea for assistance: On this coming Sunday, February 11, an offering will be taken at both services to assist those churches in Puerto Rico that have been devastated by the storms. All funds collected will be given to our district superintendent and the Bishop to take to Puerto Rico to assist our sister churches in rebuilding. I know you want to help, so please bring your best offering on Sunday as we show God's love to our Hispanic brothers and sisters. You have a blessed day and I thank you in advance."

You probably know that Puerto Rico was devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria last year. But four months later nearly 450,000 people are still without electrical power and other necessities. Massive relief efforts are underway, and our own UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) is working hard to help. But there’s very little money to help United Methodist and other churches repair their facilities in order to serve their communities.

UMCOR at workNow our Eastern PA conference has kicked off a new “Helping Puerto Rico Rise Again” campaign to raise $100,000 toward that effort. Bishop Peggy Johnson and three of our District Superintendents, including our own Rev. Bumkoo “BK” Chung, are asking EPA United Methodists to raise that $100,000 before they leave for Puerto Rico on Feb. 14. Your donations are needed now.

How to Give

Place your gift in one of the blank offering envelopes that are available in the pews on Sunday morning; be sure to write "Puerto Rico" on the envelope, along with your name and envelope number. But online giving is quick and easy, and there are two ways to make it even easier:

  • Use your computer, tablet or smart phone and go to our secure online giving site, give.covenant-umc.com. There you can choose the First Time option to create your own giving account for future online giving, or choose the Quick Give option. Either way, be sure to select “Puerto Rico”. You can choose to give by credit/debit card, or directly from a bank account of your choice.
  • Or you can text a gift to Covenant using your smart phone and a credit or debit card. It’s easy and secure. Just send a text message to 7177691063 with the dollar amount (e.g. "$50"), followed by the words “Puerto Rico”. The first time you do this you will be asked to fill out a short form with billing information. After the initial setup, future giving is as easy as sending a text message.
